Azeitão

Near Arrábida is the sleepy but prosperous agricultural village of Azeitão, Azeitão's Fonseca
Winery known for its red wine and with some of the finest quintas (villas or country estates) in the country. Worth a visit is 15th century Quinta da Bacalhoa, a beautiful Renaissance villa now owned by an American who allows visitors to walk around the admirable gardens (containing the oldest tile panel in the country depicting the story of Susannah and the Elders).

Another grand building in town is the Távora Palace on the central República Square, not open to visitors, but with a visible Renaissance exterior.

On the edge of town is the Fonseca Winery where visitors can sample some of Portugal's best red table wines and see its assembly-line production.

Azeitão can be reached by bus from Setúbal.
