Food & Drinks

Eating is an important part of Portuguese life. At noon as well as at night, time is taken for meals, always accompanied by a bottle of wine.

The Portuguese kitchen is not one of culinary invention, its honest and pure. There is lots of fish, huge amounts of meat and salads. Every region has its own specialties but bacalhau and frango piri piri (amongst others) are popular throughout the country.

The Alentejo has its own specialties; one of the best known is Lombo de Porco com Amêijoas, a dish with pork and clams. Cozido de grão com Vagens à Alentejana deserves a good second place as for being known, it’s a dish with lamb and chickpeas.

The Moorish influence is mostly found in deserts, lots of almonds and honey.
Very sweet and very nice!

The Portuguese wines are a different story. They are becoming more and more fascinating and by now are more appreciated in the rest of the world.
We strongly recommend testing of several bottles. The Alentejo has interesting wines.

Most of the wine domains are open to public, it’s a beautiful route and there is always a restaurant nearby…
